The mooring buoy has two functions. First, it serves to support the rode and floats it off the bottom. Second, it absorbs the shock of heavy waves and wind which helps to increase holding power. Transport Canada have regulations around the type and color of mooring buoys. Many buoys are constructed of polyethylene plastic filled with polyurethane foam and treated with UV inhibitors. However, air inflated net buoys are also commonly used due to their lower costs.
